7 CONTINENTS

Africa
Africa’s land mass crosses the equator and is bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Its highest point is Mt. Kilimanjaro at 19,340 feet and its lowest point is Lake Assal at 512 feet below sea level. It is home to about 778,000,000 people and consists of 53 countries, the most of any continent. This picture shows an African Elephant, the largest mammal on earth.

Asia
Asia is in the Northern Hemisphere and is attached to Europe. The highest point, Mt. Everest at 29,028 feet, is in Tibet and Nepal, which are located in Asia. The lowest point is the Dead Sea at 1341 feet below sea level. Asia has the largest population of any other continent and has 47 countries. This is a picture of The Great Wall of China, built in the 7th and 8th centuries B.C., stretches for 4,163 miles.

Antarctica
Antarctica is the only continent with a population of zero. With such cold and harsh weather conditions, it is unable to provide a home to human beings. The coldest temperature ever recorded was in Antarctica on July 21, 1983 when it reached -129 degrees Fahrenheit! As this picture illustrates, about 98% of the terrain is made up of ice and the other 2% is rock. Antarctica is populated by a variety of wildlife including penguins, whales, seals, fish, and many more.

Australia
Australia, also known as “the land down under,” is an island located in the Southern Hemisphere. Because it is located below the equator, winter in Australia is during June, July, and August, the opposite. Its capital is Sydney. Australia is home to about 31,000,000 people and has 14 countries.

Europe
Europe is located in the Northern Hemisphere and is attached to Asia. This continent is sometimes referred to as “Eurasia” since it is one land mass. Europe has a population of about 342,000,000 people and is made up of 43 countries. This picture shows the Eiffel Tower, a famous landmark located in Paris, France.

North America
North America consists of three territories: Canada, The United States, and Mexico. The United States consists of 50 states with the capital located in Washington D.C. This is a picture of the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of American freedom. North America is home to 483,000,000 people, which makes it the 4th largest populated continent.

South America
South America is mostly located in the Southern Hemisphere. It is bordered by the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. South America is populated by 342,000,000 people and consists of 12 countries. This picture shows the Amazon Rainforest, which gets nine feet of rain every year! Because of such thick vegetation, about 20% of earth's oxygen is produced by the rainforest.
